Staying safe: Two girls and a famous couple stop robberies
Two stories inspired me this week on the eve of July 4th celebrations. The nation was on high alert because of possible terrorist attacks, but these stories gave me hope. One were sisters who had intruders enter their home. The other was a well-known anchor woman and her husband also well known and how they handled an armed person. Incidentally, this outcome quieted those who wanted guns removed from the hands of normal people.
In the case of the two young girls, they did right by hiding and having a cell phone within reach. Using the cell from the bathroom cabinet, one of them gave explicit details to the 911 dispatcher that allowed them to arrest the first of two intruders that intended to rob the home. Apparently, they caught up with both criminals thanks to the information the one in the cabinet whispered over the phone.
Both of them did right. If there were intruders in the house and there wasn’t a way out, it was best to hide. Luckily, smart phones worked well in a cabinet because if the landline phone was off the hook, the intruders would have known someone was in the house if it weren’t anywhere near.
They did another thing right too, They weren’t trained to handle two men, especially if they were armed like the one in the second story. Being as young as they were and not actually licensed to pack a gun, it wasn’t wise to flash any weapon unless it they planned on using it. This writer praised these two girls for being smart about safety.
If anything, the Bible allowed us to provide for and protect oneself thanks to original sin:
10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said,“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” (ESV)
The Constitution did two things:
- The Preamble a list of principles set by the founding fathers. There was a line that read ‘provide for the common defense’. My having to learn this complete introduction in sixth grade wasn’t too hard thanks to “Schoolhouse Rock”
- The Second Amendment permitted people the right to bear arms. Not only were Americans allowed to protect their homes, this was crucial to protect the borders of the United States.
According to the second story, this failed robbery attempt wasn’t because of their high profile personalities. Both of them worked at CNN. The husband as a reporter and the wife as an anchor. The robber who also had a gun, didn’t know Lynn Russell wasn’t alone. Instead of getting the money from her purse, her husband pulled the gun and shot him.
Both were allowd to carry guns. Russell didn’t miss when she fired, being a ‘crack shot’ as Inside Edition stated today. Her husband was a special forces agent so he used his training to protect his wife, even if his own were snuffed out. That was what a real hero did.
Places that expected large crowds beefed up their security because of a possible attack from ISIS within the U.S. And on the outside. Amerian embassies around the world were on alert too because of this also. Locally, there was a list of contraband items not to be brought on base. Of course, police were also pulling over intoxicated drivers and cracking down on fireworks set off inside Wichita County, which was illegal. On top of all that, they said on the news at 6 p.m. tonight for people report anything suspicious and not to have worried about bugging the police.
