Women’s soccer team setting the stage for victory on two fronts

July 2, 2015

This writer was never so excited about soccer until the Women’s team advanced to the finals last night with their win over first place Germany (2-0) last night. Last year, the men’s team lost to Belgium in overtime (2-1) which knocked them out of the running last year. They beat Ghana, usually a tough team to defeat. Depending on who won the other game between Japan and England, the American Women’s team was to face the victor of that game after tonight on Sunday next.

What was different about this team and the one in 1999? Well, they shaped the world of soccer by winning their first World Cup Title. Since that time, this title was just out of their reach, until now possibly. According to the article in the Washington Post, this year’s team entered the competition as the team least likely to rank, the underdog.

Here was what the Bible said about competition and winning:

1 Corinthians 9:25

Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. (NIV)

1 Peter 1:13-16

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (NIV)

2 Samuel 23:12

But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the LORD brought about a great victory (NIV)

These women weren’t only making their mark playing soccer on the field, they made their mark as positive role models for both boys and girls too by becoming lawyers, doctors and corporate executives. They have also had the same problem with role model soccer players that got arrested, but unlike some of the male athletes, not that many. Only one, Hope Solo, was waiting for a court decision on a domestic violence issue from last year. As late as last week someone was convicted on murder charges and domestic battery. She was probably to have received the same penalty as the men have gotten.

This stain on women’s soccer was not to have deterred the current world cup team from achieving their goal of winning this year’s title.
