Transfat the next fatality on the FDA’s hit list
This week, the FDA wanted to remove transfats from prepared or prepackaged foods because this was a main culprit in heart disease. This enemy of the human heart was found in chips, crackers, and popcorn and prolonged shelf life. The organization waa hoping to reduce the number of fatal heart attacks that happened every year. This was one reason why it was on their hit list
During the cooking, when the oils were heated, it turns them into shortening, which, worked like fat back. Anything fried had grease in the bottom of the pan. This, in turn, raised the bad cholesterol LDL in the human body, hence the heart trouble and type 2 diabetes If the body was a temple, why did people want to abuse it by eating things that weren’t good for them? Well, a longer storage life meant a lower cost, which made foods with this type of dangerous ingredient easier to purchase. Fat, like sugar, was cheap.
The biggest liability with their recommendation to remove this component was that it only solved half of the problem. America was still a nation of many obese people. There were some good points, though:
1. There was a three year time limit for all manufacturers to have removed this component from their food, which was supposed to have accommodated the smaller businesses.
2. According to a report from the 700 Club yesterday, waivers exempting businesses from this mandate were available only if it was proven that the amount found in the food was harmless.
This would have made it impossible for fathers to have stayed on their diets if they had special ones. My mother had to sneak in the reduced salt and decaffeinated coffee because my father swore he could’ve tasted the difference between the original and the other ones. My father loved ribs, Italian food, fish, steak, and brawurst with sour kraut. He also loved liver and onions too. With the high blood pressure that he had, staying away from salty foods was best. Both of my parents spent a considerable amount of time trying to find salt-free foods which were difficult. In my case, reducing my intake of cholesterol was a must in order to avoid statins. That meant baking my food instead frying it and eating pre-packaged foods with no more than five milligrams of cholesterol in them. Salt and butter weren’t used by me at all..Like my father, eating the burgers, fried chicken and sausage and egg casseroles were ok, just not all the time. For me, it was the 80/20 rule, similar to diabetics. Eating lunch with my mother on the weekends and eating the breakfast buffet at church before Sunday School was enough.
8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.(NIV)
19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; (NIV)
It was ok to have gone off the diet at least onece a week. It made me laugh to have seen Bill Cosby’s character, Heathcliff Huxtable, after eating sausage hoagies, chips and chocolate sodas when his wife was out of town and have nightmares because of it. It wasn’t so funny when his doctor yelled at him afterwards because he should’ve known better.
Even though The Daniel Plan and The 21 Day Fix were seen on television, it was up to the person as to what diet worked best after visiting their doctor. Cutting non essentials were only part of the game plan. God wanted his followers to have been both spiritually and physically healthy.
